One of D.C.’s oldest neighborhoods, Shaw and Logan Circle are located right in the heart of the Capital. A historic community, the area was used as barracks during the Civil War and later was converted to a refugee camp for newly freed slaves. However, in the 1870s, the area began to develop as a residential neighborhood, laying down elm trees and streetcar tracks in order to encourage development. An upper-class community was established after blocks and blocks of Victorian townhouses were built, many of which have been renovated and are still a major part of the aesthetic of Shaw and Logan Circle today.
