Anacostia/Congress Heights

Turning your hopes into dreams into action.

Welcome to Anacostia/ Congress Heights

DC’s official Arts & Culture District. One of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. And one of its most misunderstood.

This is where DC’s history runs deepest — and where its next chapter is being written right now. Anacostia is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Washington DC, with more than 170 years of Black history, community resilience, and cultural production. In July 2022, Mayor Bowser designated Historic Anacostia as DC’s official Arts and Culture District — “Art to Go-Go” — backed by a $3.8 million government grant. Congress Heights is undergoing one of the most significant development surges in DC right now. The Bridge District delivered its first phase in 2025: 758 apartments and 43,000+ square feet of retail. This is not a neighborhood on the verge. It is in the middle of something.

What Residents Love

  • DC’s officially designated Arts and Culture District with active government investment
  • Most affordable home prices inside DC proper — $300,000 to $400,000 range
  • Deep African American history including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
  • Major mixed-use development underway — the Bridge District, Reunion Square, MLK Gateway II

A Day In The Neighborhood

Morning starts at Busboys and Poets on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE — restaurant, bookstore, and community gathering space all in one. After that, the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail — 20 miles of paved path along the river. For dinner, Kitchen Savages on Good Hope Road. Jerk lamb chops, lobster mac and cheese, Savage fries loaded with shrimp and crab. The Infatuation called it the fine dining Anacostia needed. Summer: the Anacostia Roller Skating Pavilion in the park.
